CLIFF ILLIG is a principle investor in OnGoal, LLC, the group of successful Kansas City entrepreneurs that purchased the Kansas City Wizards from the Hunt Sports Group in 2006. Illig and Neal Patterson are co-founders of Cerner Corporation, one of the leading healthcare information technology companies in the world.
Although new to the world of professional soccer, Illig is a big believer in the value that well-managed sports enterprises bring to their communities. He is a Kansas City native that has helped lead the development and growth of one of the region’s most successful high-technology and high-performance businesses. He is an avid sports fan that is committed to making Major League Soccer a prominent part of Kansas City’s professional sports identity.
Illig believes that the Wizards represent a unique opportunity to integrate the strengths of world-class on-the-field competition and performance; a high-quality, soccer-specific event center; an outstanding youth soccer development and tournament capability; along with a fan experience that is second to none. He also believes that the popularity of youth soccer, the growth of the Hispanic and international communities in the region, all accentuated by the world-wide nature of the sport will drive tremendous fan support for professional soccer here in the Midwest.
Illig is currently Vice Chairman of the Board of Cerner Corporation. Over the last quarter century, Illig has played a number of important senior executive roles within Cerner, including President and Chief Operating Officer. In addition to his executive responsibilities at Cerner, Cliff is a substantial presence on the Kansas City entrepreneurial, life sciences and business development scenes.
He and his long-time business partner, Neal Patterson, are investors in commercial and residential real estate and a number of golf courses. Illig is an active angel investor and serves as an advisor to several Kansas City area entrepreneurial startup companies. He and Patterson have garnered a number of significant entrepreneurial and business awards and recognitions.
As one of Kansas City’s more visible corporate leaders, Illig serves on a number of significant regional civic boards and organizations. He is a past President of the Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America. He is on the Board of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. Currently, he is heavily involved in the development of the Kansas City region’s life sciences commercialization and new enterprise infrastructure. He is an Executive Board member of the First Hand Foundation. In addition, Cliff and his wife, Bonne, work extensively with the Midwest Ear Institute and support a number of other local charities and philanthropic causes.
Illig is a 1972 Distinguished Graduate of the University of Kansas School of Business. He is a Distinguished Eagle Scout, a recipient of the Boy Scouts’ Distinguished Citizen Award and a member of the Greater Kansas City Business Hall of Fame.
Cliff and Bonne Illig have two sons at the University of Kansas. They reside in Leawood, Kansas.
NEAL PATTERSON is a successful Kansas City entrepreneur who names the late Ewing Kauffman, a great local business entrepreneur and founder of the Kansas City Royals, among his personal influencers. Along with friend and business partner Cliff Illig, Patterson is a principle investor in the five-person OnGoal LLC, the group that purchased the Wizards from Hunt Sports Group in 2006.
Mr. Patterson is chairman of the board, chief executive officer and co-founder of Cerner Corporation, the world’s largest stand-alone healthcare information technology company, with more than $1.5B in revenues and more than 7,500 associates worldwide, including approximately 4,500 associates in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Mr. Patterson grew up on his family’s farm near Manchester, Oklahoma, was active in scouting, and worked his way through school. He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance and his master’s degree in business administration from Oklahoma State University in 1971 and 1972. In 1973, Mr. Patterson began his professional career as an information system consultant with Arthur Andersen & Co.
His entrepreneurial journey began in late 1979, when he and two Arthur Andersen colleagues, Cliff Illig and Paul Gorup, formed Cerner. As CEO, Mr. Patterson has spearheaded three decades of Cerner’s growth, from its inception to its current position as the world’s leading healthcare information technology company.
Patterson is an active civic participant in entrepreneurial causes. He is a co-founding member of the Entrepreneurs' Exchange, a 16-year-old forum of seasoned entrepreneurs who support and encourage the next generation of Kansas City entrepreneurs through private meetings and public events.
Neal Patterson and his wife, Jeanne Patterson, reside in the Village of Loch Lloyd, Missouri. They have four children, two with successful careers and two in college. Mr. Patterson has been voted five times as one of Modern Healthcare's "100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare."
ONGOALpartner PAT CURRAN brings a love of both soccer and the Kansas City community to the Wizards organization. Curran attended Stanford University, where he received a BA in economics. He then obtained his MBA at Northwestern University.
Curran serves as the Principal of the SBIC fund C3 Capital, LLC, and has also served as the Principal of the private equity fund C3 Holdings, LLC. Previously, he worked as chairman of Cook Composites and Polymers.
Curran’s interest in soccer began when he watched his kids play the game while they were growing up. He became very interested in the Kansas City Wizards when he saw the lack of quality facilities in Kansas City that were able to house competitive teams, along with the unsuitability of football stadiums to house professional soccer teams. Curran loves watching the Wizards and is looking forward to OnGoal’s involvement with the team for years to come.
Curran is married to wife, Janet, and has four children, Josephine, Betty Jean, Wiley and Olivia.
ROBB HEINEMAN is the Managing Principal and President of OnGoal and is responsible for developing the strategic vision for the Company and its portfolio. His background is focused on sports and finance, and is extremely diverse in experience and roles. Mr. Heineman also is an owner and serves as the President of the Kansas City Wizards of MLS, where he sits on the Board of Governors of MLS and Soccer United Marketing, LLC.
Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Heineman attended The University of Notre Dame, where he graduated with a BBA in finance. Mr. Heineman has a strong background in corporate finance and private equity as a founder and principal in Rock Island Capital, a middle market private equity firm focused on management buyouts and acquisitions of service, distribution and manufacturing companies across the United States.
Additionally, he is currently the director of finance for Five Star Lifestyles, a diversified group of golf course properties and associated residential developments owned by Cliff Illig and Neal Patterson.
Heineman has been involved in sports ownership since 1992 as an owner/operator of the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA Development League.
Heineman has a wife, Amber and two children, Katherine and Charlie.
GREG MADAY, a member of OnGoal, LLC, and an operating advisor at Rock Island Capital, LLC, brings a wealth of experience and a strong sense of the entrepreneurial spirit to the Kansas City Wizards. Currently, he is the Chairman and CEO of SpecChem, a manufacturer of specialty chemicals and concrete-related building products, and also serves as the managing partner and owner of Gem Holdings, LLC, an asset-holding and investment company, and Gem Long Beach, LLC, a real estate-holding company.
Maday attended college at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Business Administration in Finance. He served as a commercial real estate mortgage broker and owner of Institutional Investors of Mid-America from 1987-90. Maday then went to work with and eventually acquired Conspec Marketing and Manufacturing Company, Inc., a manufacturer of specialty chemicals and concrete-related building materials, where he served as owner, president and CEO. He has also served as owner, president and CEO of Bristol Investment, Inc., and Conspec Performance Products, Inc.
Maday is very involved with the Kansas City community, and currently serves as a Chairman elect of the American Royal Board of Governors, as a fellow with the Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program and as a member of the Board of Directors for UMB, NA,. . He also volunteers his time with the Front Porch Alliance, United Way, Impact KC, Village Presbyterian Church, and other organizations.
Maday is married to wife, Elizabeth, and has two children, Alexandra, and Max.
