MLS Experience

2004: Mike Petke was a stalwart on the defensive back line for D.C. United, making 24 appearances during the 2004 season. Petke's defensive work helped United maintain one of the lowest goals against totals in club history, while his lone goal of the season was the deciding factor in United's 3-2 win over the New York/New Jersey MetroStars that vaulted the team into second place in the Eastern Conference standings.

2003: Petke served as a staple in United's defense, missing only five games on the year due to injuries and suspensions. Petke fought through a broken bone in his ankle and returned to the United back line following a remarkably fast recovery. His defensive skills helped to make United's back line one of the most formidable in the league. His offensive contributions included the first goal of the season for the Black-and-Red against the Kansas City Wizards on 4/12. He added a second tally in United's 3-0 thumping of the Columbus Crew at home on 6/14 and forced overtime against the Columbus Crew with a spectacular header six minutes into stoppage time on 10/19.

2002: In his fifth MLS season with the MetroStars, Petke became the all-time regular season leader in games (134) and minutes played (11,520). The 26-year old started all 27 games in which he appeared. Petke captained the side in the absence of Tab Ramos and Tim Howard for the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals against Columbus (8/7), and was named a starter for the MLS All-Star team that faced the U.S. Men's National Team in RFK on 8/3. Petke played the entire first half of the game and entered the second half as sub for another 20 minutes of action during the 3-2 MLS win.

2001: Petke appeared in his second straight MLS All-Star Game when fans voted him into the Eastern Conference starting lineup for the mid-season showcase in San Jose. He started and played the first 45 minutes of the 6-6 draw. Petke scored the second goal against Deportivo Italchacao of Venezuela on 8/8 in the MetroStars' Copa Merconorte opener winning 2-0. With his 92nd appearance in a MetroStars kit, he broke the team record for games played against the Kansas City Wizards on 5/24.

2000: Petke recorded career highs in minutes (2,672) and goals (3) while helping the MetroStars to the 2000 Eastern Division Title. The defender was credited with his lone assist of the season on an Adolfo Valencia goal in the 41st minute of a 4-2 home win over the New England Revolution on 6/17. He clinched the club's first ever overtime win (3-2) against D.C. United off a 98th minute Lothar Matthaus free kick on 4/22. In his first MLS All-Star game, Petke played 56 minutes as the East defeated the West 9-4 at Columbus Crew Stadium.

1999: Petke equaled his rookie season's production with one goal and one assist. He had his first bout with injury as an MLS player, missing four matches due to a sprained left ankle. In the home opener on 3/28, his lone tally of the season came in the form of a header in the club's 1-0 victory over Columbus. The defender registered his only assist of the season on a goal by Eduardo Hurtado on 5/29 in a 4-3 shootout loss to the New England Revolution at Giants Stadium.

1998: Selected by the MetroStars in the first round (eighth overall) of the 1998 College Draft, Petke started 25 of his 27 games as a rookie, totaling 2,234 minutes. Calm and composed with the ball, the defender was a finalist for the MLS Rookie of the Year award. Petke recorded his first start on 4/17, a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire. His first MLS assist came a few days later (4/25) on a Jim Rooney goal against the San Jose Earthquakes in a 4-3 home win. Petke's first and only goal of the season was the 69th minute game-winner on 6/24 against New England. The fans voted the goal as the MetroStars.com Goal of the Year. Petke also tallied the deciding ninth-round shootout marker in the MetroStars first-ever win at Foxboro Stadium on 5/31. He played all 98 minutes in a 1-0 overtime victory over the Hampton Roads Mariners (A-League) in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup at Kean University-East Campus on 7/8.

International

2002: Petke was part of the 2002 U.S. Men's National Team player pool, earning his first cap during a scoreless draw with Ecuador in Columbus on 6/7, playing the full 90 minutes.

1996: Petke was part of the U.S. Olympic Team player pool in Atlanta.

1995: Petke captained the U.S. Under-21 Team, and was a member of the U.S. squad that competed in the World University Games in Japan.

College

1998: At Southern Connecticut State University, Petke was awarded All-New England Collegiate Conference First Team honors. He totaled two goals and four assists in 22 starts as a tri-captain of the team.

1997: Petke was named NECC Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-NECC and was a consensus NSCAA/Umbro First Team All-America selection.

1995: Petke led SCSU to the NCAA Division II national championship and was named Conference Rookie of the Year.
