Quakes, Club Quake, SSVFC team for Light The Night Walk
Players, front office staff, fans will walk together in Oct. 10 event
The Earthquakes will also host The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 22 when the Quakes take on the Kansas City Wizards. Six-year old Isabella Lima, who has survived a rare form of blood cancer, will perform the honorary First Kick prior to the match. Throughout the night, the Earthquakes will also host a silent auction for signed Earthquakes jerseys, as well as signed jerseys from prominent players from around the league. Proceeds from the auction will benefit both LLS and the San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund. Fans will be able to sign up for the Light The Night Walk at the LLS booth in the pregame vendor area.
During the game, fans will also have the opportunity to donate directly to LLS through their mobile giving campaign. Fans will be asked to text a specific number that will appear on the video board during the game to make a $5 donation to the cause. The $5 will be applied directly to a donor's monthly phone bill. The money donated will go directly to the Earthquakes walk team.
On Oct. 10, Club Quake, SSVCF and the Earthquakes will host a viewing party for the Quakes game that day at the Britannia Arms at Almaden. The Quakes take on Toronto FC at BMO Field in Toronto and fans can catch the game at the Brit at 1:00 p.m. PT. At the viewing party, a raffle will be held for people that have signed up for the Earthquakes walk team. For every $25 donated to the walk team, a fan will receive a raffle ticket. The prizes includes two sideline seats for a 2010 Earthquakes home match, a team signed ball, a team-signed jersey and other prizes.
The Light The Night Walk festivities at Palo Alto High School will begin at 5 p.m. PT, with the walk starting at 7 p.m. Participants walk carrying illuminated balloons to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. All funds raised through the Light The Night Walk support LLS's mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Children, adults and seniors are all encouraged to participate in the event. Fans that sign up for the Earthquakes Team will receive a commemorative t-shirt.
The Earthquakes team will be walking this year in honor of Monique Larson, a San Jose resident and soccer mom, who was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia in 2007, and is currently in remission. To read her full story, click here.
