Last Game

Earthquakes 1, Houston 3; May 23, 2009; Robertson Stadium; Houston, Texas.
Three goals off set pieces in the first 12 minutes, two where a Houston Dynamo forward was completely unmarked, doomed the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday night. An inspired performance from Ryan Johnson could not get back all three goals as the Earthquakes fell 3-1 at Robertson Stadium. The poor defense that has plagued San Jose all year reared its ugly head early. Dynamo midfielder Brad Davis took a free kick from 40 yards out and it seemed to catch the Quakes defense sleeping. Johnson lost his mark as Brian Ching broke free at the far post and finished his header clinically. San Jose defenders looked for an offside call, but the linesmen kept his flag down and the Quakes trailed early. In the 12th minute Houston got its second goal in similar fashion. Another Davis set piece, this time a corner kick, found the head of a wide-open Kei Kamara. The former Quakes forward buried his header past a helpless Joe Cannon and San Jose trailed 2-0. San Jose had a couple of solid chances themselves in the first half, but was unable to capitalize. In the 11th minute, Cam Weaver flicked the ball on to Johnson and the forward was not closed down by the Houston defense. But Johnson's shot was saved well by Dynamo 'keeper Pat Onstad. Then in the 33rd minute, an Arturo Alvarez shot from distance was tipped over and halftime came with Houston still ahead 2-0. But early in the second half, another Davis corner kick gave Houston yet another goal. This time the ball was headed clear by a Quakes defender to the top of the box. However, Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron headed the ball back in where Craig Waibel was poaching in front of Cannon. The Houston right back quickly turned and scored, giving Houston a 3-0 lead. Johnson, though, was not willing to go quietly. The Quakes forward tried to almost singlehandedly inspire his team. In the 53rd minute, Cam Weaver headed a free kick back across goal and Johnson and Cameron crashed violently into each other. Johnson though got to the ball first, and his header off the underside of the crossbar got one goal back for the Quakes. In the 60th minute, Johnson almost pulled another goal back. A cross from Hernandez found Johnson again at the far post and again his header beat Onstad. Unfortunately though, the linesman flag was raised and the goal was nullified as Johnson appeared to be offside.

Last Match vs. Columbus

Earthquakes 2, Crew 0; June 7, 2008; Crew Stadium: Columbus, Ohio
The San Jose Earthquakes shut out the Columbus Crew 2-0 at Crew Stadium. Ryan Johnson and Ramiro Corrales scored goals for the Quakes, both on passes from Ronnie O'Brien. The Earthquakes scored first in the 10th minute on a header from Johnson. Ronnie O'Brien retrieved a poor clearance on the right wing and drove a perfect cross to the back post. Johnson leapt and drove a header to the near post past a diving Will Hesmer for a 1-0 Quakes lead. The Crew's Jed Zayner came close to tying the score with a blast from 30 yards out with 10 minutes to go in the half. He picked up the ball and unloaded a shot that beat Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon, but skimmed off the crossbar and went out of play. Ned Grabavoy made a stellar defensive play 14 minutes into the second half to keep San Jose ahead. Guillermo Barros Schelotto received the ball 10 yards from goal and eluded a defender to free himself for a shot. Just as Schelotto shot, Grabavoy slid in to block the shot and prevent a goal. Moments later, O'Brien helped the Quakes stretch their lead to 2-0 with a nicely placed free kick. The Irish-born midfielder curled a cross to the penalty spot for Corrales, who nodded a header into the corner for his second goal of the year. Alejandro Moreno appeared to pull one back for the home team midway through the second half, but the goal was disallowed. Moreno dove for a cross in the goalmouth and redirected the ball past Cannon with his forearm. The linesman immediately raised his flag to disallow the goal. Cannon made one final save in stoppage time to preserve the shutout. Robbie Rogers half-volleyed a shot from inside the box, but Cannon held his ground to block Rogers' blast.

Last Match vs. Real Salt Lake
Real Salt Lake 3, Earthquakes 2; September 27, 2008; Buck Shaw Stadium: Santa Clara, Calif.
Real Salt Lake claiming a priceless 3-2 victory in an action-packed affair at Buck Shaw Stadium. Real's Yura Movsisyan and the Quakes' Darren Huckerby traded goals in each half, but it was RSL midfielder Javier Morales who had the last word, scoring on a curling free kick in the 59th minute to put the visitors ahead to stay. Real got off to a dream start in the third minute, when Morales picked out Movsisyan with a ball over the top, and after faking Nick Garcia to the ground, the Armenian coolly slotted home past Quakes' keeper Joe Cannon for a 1-0 lead. The Quakes spent the next 20 minutes jawing with RSL players as well referee Paul Ward over what the home side perceived was some overly physical play. But San Jose got back in the game in the 23rd minute, when a long pass from Ryan Cochrane sprung Huckerby in the clear, and he responded with a composed finish of his own to level matters. San Jose picked up where they left off to start the second half. Huckerby began the sequence with a run down the left wing, and when the ball fell to Alvarez, he responded with a cheeky backheel to Huckerby that saw the Englishman rifle home from 20 yards. The lead lasted all of two minutes however, as yet another long ball over the top to Movsisyan sprung him on another breakaway, and he lofted his shot over the advancing Cannon, making the score 2-2. Morales then notched the game-winner in the 59th minute by bending a 25-yard free kick past Cannon and into the upper right hand corner. San Jose nearly equalized in the 78th minute when Huckerby's corner kick found Jason Hernandez at the far post, but RSL 'keeper Nick Rimando was able to parry his header wide and Real walked off the field with the victory.
