Paule's PK pushes Crew to victory
Midfielder Kyle Martino won the game-winning penalty when he was taken down just inside the box by Syracuse defender Rene Rivas. Paule slotted the spot kick to the left of the outstretched arms of Syracuse goalkeeper Paul Nagy to send the 2002 U.S. Open Cup champions to the third round.
The Crew looked like they had the game won when forward Edson Buddle scored in the 70th minute to put the Black & Gold on top. But Syracuse's Scott Schweitzer knocked home a loose ball just outside the Crew box in the 81st minute to tie the game, the only shot on goal for Syracuse on the night (outshot overall 15-3).
With the victory, the Crew advance to the round-of-16, and will face the Chicago Fire on Tuesday, July 20 at Crew Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET. Those teams meet this Saturday in a league match, also at Crew Stadium at 7:30 p.m., to be televised on Fox Sports World.
