No one knew who would win or what would happen for sure. But they were wearing their colors either way. Fans began the day in Pioneer Square for the now traditional "March to the Match." Drew Carey and the Sounders band led the way, joined by MLS Commissioner Don Garber and a couple of thousand fans.
"The march to the match was exciting," Real Salt Lake fan Jessica Veazey said. "There were a lot of RSL fans, and a ton of energy. It was a celebration of soccer in the United States."
Fans for both teams made the journey to see their teams play in MLS Cup. Whether new fans or old fans, they felt it was something they couldn't pass up.
"We live about two and a half hours away," Los Angeles Galaxy fan Stephanie Mittmann said. "But I was born and raised in California. I'm a Galaxy fan. I'm excited they're here today."
The march inspired visiting fan groups to want to implement something similar in their hometowns.
"Maybe we could have Donnie or Marie Osmond lead our parade," RSL fan Elliot Veazey said with a laugh. "We don't really have any celebrities involved in our team. The march is festive. It's something that U.S. fans are not really accustomed to. It brings in an international feel."
The fans packed the stadium at the first whistle, with scarves around their necks awaiting the start of the match.
