Fire's Rolfe heading to Denmark
Forward will join Aalborg of Danish SuperLiga in January
Rolfe is under contract with Major League Soccer through this season, and the Fire had opened negotiations with him in hopes of keeping him. But Fire technical director Frank Klopas said Wednesday he understands Rolfe's decision to leave.
"We knew he was going to have some great opportunities," Klopas said. "He is a talented player. I know he wants to have that experience. He's at the age where if he doesn't make this move now, he might not have this opportunity again."
Rolfe has played five seasons for the Fire, and his 35 career goals rank second on the team behind Ante Razov, who scored 76 times for the Fire. Rolfe has scored five times this season with one assist.
Besides his play with the Fire, Rolfe has 10 caps with the U.S. national team.
"This is a good time for this, because we are in a good position for the playoffs, and I know Chris wants to win a championship with us," Klopas said. "He has been with us a long time. He was in our PDL program. We want what is best for him, and if he didn't make the move now, we don't want him to regret it."
