Chivas USA on Wednesday announced the signing of the 31-year-old veteran, who joins an already potent stable of strikers led by Maykel Galindo and Ante Razov. Lillingston had been training with the team since its preseason trip to Guadalajara in February, and terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"I'm excited to contribute the experience I have," said Lillingston, "and to work hard on the field for my teammates, my coach, and the fans."
Before arriving at Chivas USA, Lillingston had spent the entirety of his professional career in Mexico's FMF Primera Division with such teams as CF Atlas and Santos Laguna. Most recently he played for Guadalajaran outfit Tecos UAG, where he scored 15 times in 81 appearances.
Lillingston has also spent time in the international arena, appearing at the 1997 FIFA Youth World Championships as part of the Mexican under-20 national team. The squad's leading goalscorer for the tournament, he netted three times in three games to lead Mexico into the round-of-16.
"He brings experience," said Chivas USA head coach Preki. "He's played in Mexico for quite a few years and he's ready to score goals. Hopefully, he can settle in this league and give us a good boost."
Lillingston has had a productive preseason. Appearing in nearly all of the Red-and-White's scrimmages since his arrival in camp, he has managed a goal and an assist in four games.
"He brings a different style," said fellow striker Justin Braun. "His game is something that a lot of players here aren't used to."
Lillingston and Braun have formed a solid partnership in the absence of recuperating strikers Galindo, Razov and Alecko Eskandarian. Lillingston's finesse and nose for goal provide a nice compliment to Braun's physicality and speed.
"I like playing with him," said Braun. "His style gives me more freedom to run around. I think he'll be a good asset to our team."
The Chivas USA coaching staff will have high expectations for Lillingston's productivity this season, but he is happy to accept the test.
"I've challenged myself to score 10 goals this season," said Lillingston. "But I'm excited for that challenge and am excited to come to MLS."
