Ten-man Red Bulls buck Dynamo
And they have Jozy Altidore to thank, finally burying one of his several chances as the Red Bulls beat Houston Dynamo 1-0.
Mathis missed a penalty kick in the 10th minute and was then sent off by referee Baldomero Toledo with a straight red card in the 36th minute. Mathis was sent off for the seventh time in his career for a reckless challenge on Ryan Cochrane in the middle of the park.
Until the controversial red, the Red Bulls dominated the match, their best scoring chance of course came on the Mathis penalty after Dwayne De Rosario blatantly handled Dane Richards' cross in the box. Mathis, who was also stopped on his last two attempts for New York, was stopped by Pat Onstad, who dived to his right to save the low shot.
Altidore, who was the most dangerous player on the field, finally beat Onstad on the hour mark. The 17-year-old took Hunter Freeman's pass, took a touch past defender Eddie Robinson and put the ball off the crossbar and in for his second goal of the season.
Until that point, Altidore's night was full of frustration. In the 25th minute, he made a brilliant run, darting past Robinson's slide tackle and taking a touch inside of Kelly Gray. But his left-footed shot from the edge of the six-yard box sailed over the bar.
Two minutes later, Altidore got on the end of a Freeman cross, but flicked his header wide of the net.
Dynamo had a pair of chances midway through the first half, but Brad Davis put the ball wide of goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus' left from the top of the 18-yard box. One minute later, Paul Dalglish's first time shot off a pass from Alejandro Moreno was wide of the far post.
Three minutes from the halftime break, Richards broke in on a counterattack, but Onstad easily saved the rookie's low, tough-angled shot. The speedy midfielder left the game in the 54th minute with an apparent left knee injury, replaced by the versatile Seth Stammler.
Altidore was replaced by John Wolyniec in the 74th minute and Joe Vide came on for Dave van den Bergh in the first minute of stoppage time.
Waterreus, who earned his third clean sheet, stopped a Davis free kick from 26 yards out in the 50th minute. Two minutes later van den Bergh set up Altidore with a sitter, but his shot inches from goal sailed over the bar.
Dynamo's final chance came one minute from full time, but second half substitute Richard Mulrooney put his low shot from 16 yards out wide of Waterreus. In the second minute of stoppage time, De Rosario headed a corner kick wide of the net.
After missing last week's 3-0 win over FC Dallas because of a left leg contusion, Claudio Reyna made his home debut for the Red Bulls against Dynamo. To make room for him in the lineup, Stammler went to the substitutes' bench for the Red Bulls lone change.
Dominic Kinnear tweaked his lineup from last Saturday's 1-0 win against Chivas USA. The biggest change was Moreno starting in place of Brian Ching, who was held out in a precautionary move until the 69th minute because of an injured knee. The other change was Ryan Cochrane starting in place of Craig Waibel.
One minute after Ching came on, recently-acquired Mulrooney made his debut, replacing Davis. In the 73rd minute, Dynamo made their final change as Chris Wondolowski came on for Dalglish.
