FRISCO, Texas -- As with every Major League Soccer event -- and many regular season games across the league -- fans that turned out early to Pizza Hut Park on Sunday for MLS Cup were treated to an afternoon of interactive soccer fun at the 2005 MLS Cup Soccer Celebration.
The event, held at Pizza Hut Park's Dr. Pink Field, gave those in attendance a chance to share in their excitement for the game between the New England Revolution and Los Angeles Galaxy, test their soccer skills with various games and challenges, and even meet some of the league's most recognizable players.
The festivities even overflowed into the stadium parking lots, as several MLS sponsors featured their products from specialized vehicles. Makita Tools appealed to the adult crowd with the Experience Makita Tour, a 53-foot vehicle with more than 140 tools and accessories on display, interactive demonstrations and engineering exhibits. Honda displayed some of their newest innovations and Sierra Mist made its presence known as well.
But the highlights of Soccer Celebration were the activities for kids and the chance to meet some of the most accomplished players in the league. Local star Ronnie O'Brien from FC Dallas was more than happy to oblige in the taking of photographs and supplying his autograph.
"I can't play today, so I figured I've got to do something for the fans," he said. "Fans love to see this and it helps the league grow."
That sentiment was echoed by Tony Pace of Norman, Okla.
"We're hoping to see some players and get some autographs," he said. "We've very excited. It's a beautiful day and it should be a great game."
While meeting their heroes, the youngsters in attendance worked up a sweat of their own in the various skills challenges provided by MLS sponsors. There was an accuracy kick, a power shot, green screen photographs that gave fans their own picture with the Alan I. Rothenberg trophy and much more.
"I took shots on goal, did the obstacle course and got a tattoo," said young soccer enthusiast and Landon Donovan fan Kyle Siems.
Soccer Celebration continued until a half-hour before kickoff, at which time the majority of the fans made their way inside the stadium for the main event. But for those who smartly planned ahead to arrive early, they were also able to enjoy quite the undercard.
