Albright taking to defensive switch

FRISCO, Texas -- Seven-year MLS veteran Chris Albright has taken on a new role this season -- becoming a real leader in the Los Angeles defense.

In his second season after a conversion to right back, Albright scored a goal and added two assists for Los Angeles. But despite a seeming lack of experience as a defender -- Albright was a forward in his college days at the University of Virginia and in his first years in the league with D.C. United -- this year he also took on new responsibilities in the team after a big influx of players during the offseason.

"Obviously I think we have a young team in general," said Albright. "I think some of the guys have become leaders by default, some guys have openly taken on that role.

"When I came into the league there were a lot of older guys that kind of took care of me. Hopefully, I'm trying to do the same thing."

Albright's leadership along with veteran Cobi Jones has stabilized the young lineup that includes rookie Ugo Ihemulu, Ned Grabavoy and Herculez Gomez.

"Certainly, I think historically over the entire season, when Chris Albright and Cobi Jones have been clicking the team has done quite well," said Galaxy head coach Steve Sampson.

"Late in a game when we're looking for a goal, the most obvious person for us to put forward is Chris Albright because he has great speed and he can hold the ball under pressure and he creates great opportunities."

Albright, who has also become a regular in the back for the U.S. national team, is a dynamic player as a fullback with his attacking prowess. That versatility has made Albright a valuable weapon for Sampson.

"I think every year Chris Albright keeps getting better. He started out in the league as an attacking player and slowly moved into an outside back position," said Sampson. "I really believe he's become a rare commodity in this league as an outside back who can get forward with great speed and ability and can get back and defend.

"I think he has been invaluable to our success this year. I think he's maturing as a player and for that obvious reason he's a strong consideration for the national team."
